Trump To Reverse Biden’s Decision, Move U.S. Space Command To Alabama From Colorado

U.S. Space Command Headquarters to Move to Alabama, Reversing Biden-Era Decision

In a reversal of a Biden-era decision, the Trump administration will announce on Tuesday that the permanent headquarters for U.S. Space Command will be located in Huntsville, Alabama, according to sources familiar with the plan. The announcement marks the end of a four-year political and economic battle between Alabama and Colorado for the prestigious military command.

The move, which President Trump is expected to make public in an afternoon address, overrides former President Joe Biden’s 2023 decision to keep the command at its temporary home in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Biden’s administration had cited concerns over “readiness disruptions” as the reason for keeping the command in Colorado, even after an earlier Air Force review in 2021 had identified Huntsville as the preferred site.

Huntsville, known as “Rocket City,” has deep ties to the U.S. space program. It is already home to the Army’s Redstone Arsenal, NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, and the Army’s Space and Missile Defense Command. The presence of Space Command is expected to bring significant economic benefits to the region.

The decision has long been anticipated, as a Defense Department inspector general review was unable to conclusively determine why Colorado was chosen over Alabama. Trump, a Republican with strong support in Alabama, has consistently favored moving the command to the state.

The functions of Space Command include vital operations such as providing satellite-based navigation, troop communication, and early warning of missile launches.
