New York’s Wealthy ‘Fleeing’ To Florida As Socialist Mayoral Candidate Zohran Mamdani Leads In Polls

Wealthy New Yorkers are increasingly looking to relocate to Palm Beach, Florida, citing potential tax hikes and policy changes should Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani win the New York City mayoral race, according to a Fox News report on Monday.

A Suffolk University poll released Monday shows Mamdani with 43.8% of likely voters, approximately 10 points ahead of independent candidate and former Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Mamdani’s platform includes plans to increase taxes by an additional 2% on the top 1% of earners (those making over $1 million per year) to fund initiatives such as rent freezes, free buses, and city-owned grocery stores. He has also made statements during his campaign that “billionaires should not exist.”

Florida’s Appeal: No State Income Tax

Miami-based Fox News reporter Danamarie McNicholl noted a “new sense of urgency for wealthy New York buyers” in Palm Beach real estate.

“These are families, empty nesters, looking to buy a home like this and gain residency. So some New Yorkers are taking a closer look at Florida’s no-state income tax, especially as a potential tax hike looms,” McNicholl said on “America Reports.”

Luxury real estate agent Johnny DelPrete confirmed the trend, saying that “high-net-worth people” are concerned about the value they receive for their tax dollars. “There definitely has been more traffic, more flow through here in regards to showings,” he added.

Boca Raton Officials See ‘Mamdani Effect’

The phenomenon is also being observed at the local government level. Republican Boca Raton Mayor Scott Singer stated the “Mamdani effect is real,” noting he has been “fielding calls from worried New Yorkers.” The city even launched a website, newyorktoboca.com, in June, which has since seen thousands of views, and promoted it with a billboard in Times Square.

Mayor Singer also noted that, in addition to tax concerns, New Yorkers are worried about a potential increase in crime under a Mamdani administration.

The potential exodus has drawn comments from political figures, including Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who quipped in June that a Mamdani win would cause “real estate value skyrocket even more in Palm Beach,” as “people are gonna get out of that city.”
