Former FBI Director Comey Indicted In Virginia On Obstruction, False Statement Charges

Former FBI Director faces charges of making false statements and obstruction of justice

Former FBI Director James Comey has been indicted on two of the three counts sought by prosecutors: one count of making false statements and one count of obstruction of justice.

The indictment, secured by a grand jury in the Eastern District of Virginia, follows the recent departure of the office’s previous U.S. attorney, who had reportedly expressed reservations about pursuing the case.

The charges against Comey are connected to his September 30, 2020, testimony before a congressional committee regarding the FBI’s handling of the 2016 Russia investigation. The indictment was sought as prosecutors faced a five-year statute of limitations deadline to bring charges.

This development follows President Donald Trump’s public criticism of the Department of Justice for not acting sooner to prosecute Comey and other political figures.

The former U.S. attorney for the district, Erik Siebert, was removed from his position after sources indicated he had resisted pressure to bring charges against Comey and others.

Trump then appointed Lindsey Halligan, a White House aide and his former defense attorney, to lead the office.
