Federal Prosecutors Charge Nearly 300 In Arizona Border Crackdown
Federal prosecutors in Arizona charged 293 people with immigration-related offenses during a single week of enforcement operations, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona announced.
The criminal filings, handled between Aug. 22 and Aug. 28, 2026, targeted individuals entering the country without authorization as well as alleged human smugglers.
Federal prosecutors filed 149 cases against individuals accused of illegal reentry after previous removals, along with 132 cases for unlawful entry. Another 11 cases were filed against 12 individuals accused of smuggling noncitizens into and through the district.
The enforcement sweep involved multiple federal agencies, including U.S. Border Patrol, ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ICE-ERO), Homeland Security Investigations (ICE-HSI), the FBI, the DEA, the U.S. Marshals Service, and the ATF.
Several specific cases from the operation led to high-speed pursuits or involved defendants with prior criminal convictions.
On Aug. 24, Jesus Antonio Madrigal was charged with transportation of an illegal alien. According to court filings, Border Patrol agents on Aug. 21 spotted a Honda Accord heading south on Federal Route 19 toward the Mexico border before returning north shortly after.
When agents attempted an immigration stop, the car fled at speeds topping 100 mph. Agents stationed at an immigration checkpoint on State Route 86 deployed spike strips, stopping the car and arresting Madrigal. Authorities confirmed the backseat passenger was a Mexican citizen in the country unlawfully.
That same day, federal officials charged Jabari Kaleem Mims with transportation of an illegal alien for profit. Border Patrol camera operators on Aug. 22 watched a person get into a BMW stopped near Border Road.
When agents tried to follow, Mims ran a stop sign and sped off, ignoring emergency lights. Camera operators tracked the vehicle until Mims stopped briefly, letting a passenger run into nearby brush. Agents later located the passenger, identified as an undocumented Mexican citizen, while other units stopped Mims and took him into custody.
Prosecutors also charged Jose Manuel Arenas-Pinzon on Aug. 23 with reentry of a removed alien. Records show immigration authorities previously removed Arenas-Pinzon from the country on June 2, 2021, following a conviction in Arizona Superior Court for transportation of dangerous drugs for sale, which carried a 10-year prison sentence.
Court dates for the defendants are pending in federal court.
