Data Spotlight - Destruction, damage to property in 2024 according to FBI CDE data

Figures from the FBI Crime Data Explorer, 2024

Destruction/Damage/Vandalism of Property Offender vs. Victim Demographics

By Race, Percentages:

  • White - 24%
  • Black - 17%
  • Race Not specified - 45%
  • Unknown - 13%

Total # of Offenders: 1,720,329

By Ethnicity:

  • Hispanic - 7%

"Whites" includes Hispanics because of the difference between how the goverment classifies race vs ethnicity. Someone can be White because of the color of his/her skin, but Hispanic because of his/her ethnicity. This means some of the 24% "White" offenders are actually Hispanic - potentially 7% points.

Census Bureau - Population Demographics As of July 1, 2024:

  • White, not Hispanic - 58.4%
  • Black - 13.7%
  • Hispanic - 19.5%

Rate of Offender, by Race/Ethnicity (per 10,000):

  • White - 20.36
  • White, not Hispanic (if half of them are White) - 17.54
  • Black - 61.47
  • Hispanic - 16.89

Summary

This means Blacks are 3-3.5x as likely to be offenders of damage/destruction as Whites. And this is before we factor in the biggest unknown/withheld piece of data - 58% of the offenders are indicated as "not specified" or "unknown."

Other factors to consider:

  • Organized crime / domestic terrorist organizations
  • Lack of reporting by local law enforcement
  • Limited resources for law enforcement
  • Ideology breakdown (left vs conservative)
