California Rep. Eric Swalwell Criminally Referred To DOJ For Alleged Mortgage Fraud

California Democratic Congressman Eric Swalwell has been criminally referred to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for alleged mortgage fraud.

The criminal referral was made by Bill Pulte, the head of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, who accused the Congressman of making “false or misleading statements on a mortgage application.” The accusation is believed to pertain to a $1.2 million house that Swalwell owns in the Washington, D.C., area.

Swalwell has not been charged with any crime; the referral indicates that a government agency suspects possible illegal activity on the mortgage documents, and the Justice Department will now review the evidence to determine if charges are warranted.

The Congressman has released a statement responding to the referral, suggesting the move is politically motivated.

Swallwell stated that, as “the most vocal critic of Donald Trump over the last decade and as the only person who still has a surviving lawsuit against him, the only thing I am surprised about is that it took him this long to come after me.”

This is a developing story.
