Zelenskyy Joins Global Leaders In High-Stakes Talks With Trump

White House buzzes as European power players join Ukraine’s President, hoping to chart a path to peace amid renewed Russian aggression.

A high-stakes diplomatic flurry unfolded at the White House today as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived for critical talks with President Donald Trump. He was not alone. In a show of unified support, Zelenskyy was joined by a formidable lineup of European leaders, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

The meeting follows a separate summit held last week in Alaska between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. While Trump called his sit-down with Putin “productive,” no ceasefire was announced, leaving many questions about the path forward, some of which may be answered today.

For Ukraine, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Even as diplomats gathered in Washington, the war continued to rage. Ukrainian officials reported multiple deadly Russian drone and missile strikes on the cities of Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia.

Meanwhile, Russian state media released a propaganda video showing a “captured” American personnel carrier, flying both Russian and U.S. flags, a jab at Western military aid to Kyiv.

The White House meeting marked a stark contrast to a contentious encounter between Trump and Zelenskyy in February, where Vice President J.D. Vance publicly challenged the Ukrainian leader on his level of gratitude for U.S. assistance.

Today’s meeting was far more amicable, with Zelenskyy repeatedly thanking the U.S. for its support. Observers noted that the Ukrainians appear to be taking a more careful approach in their dealings with the U.S. administration.

Adding a touch of humor to the serious proceedings, President Trump commented on Ukraine’s wartime pause on elections with a joke about the U.S. adopting a similar measure if it were at war.

“I wonder what the fake news would say about that?” Trump quipped, drawing a laugh from Zelenskyy, who playfully responded, “You like this idea.”
