‘We Agree On A Lot’: Trump Shockingly Embraces NYC’s Socialist Mayor-Elect In Oval Office Lovefest

The political world expected a brawl. Instead, they got a pat on the back.

In a twist that seemed to baffle the White House press corps, President Donald Trump welcomed New York City’s Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani—a self-described democratic socialist—into the Oval Office on Friday not as an ideological enemy, but as a “rational person” he plans to cheer for.

“We agree on a lot more than I would have thought,” Trump admitted, sitting alongside the man he had previously branded a “communist” throughout the heated mayoral campaign.

The meeting marked a stunning reversal from the campaign trail, where Trump had repeatedly threatened to strangle New York City’s federal funding if Mamdani took City Hall. On Friday, those threats evaporated.

“I expect to be helping him, not hurting him,” Trump said, adding that he would now be “comfortable” living in New York under a Mamdani administration. “The better he does, the happier I am.”

‘It’s OK, You Can Say It’

The session was punctuated by moments of bizarre comedy as the two attempted to bury the hatchet. When reporters pressed Mamdani on whether he stood by his previous comments labeling the President a “fascist” and a “despot,” the room tensed.

Trump, however, diffused the moment with a shrug. Tapping Mamdani on the arm, the President smiled and advised his guest, “You can just say yes. It’s easier.”

Mamdani offered a tepid “OK, yes,” to which Trump laughed. “I’ve been called much worse than a despot,” the President quipped. “So it’s not that insulting.”

Finding Common Ground on Cost of Living

Despite the vast gap between Trump’s right-wing populism and Mamdani’s socialist platform, the two New Yorkers found alignment on the issue of affordability.

Mamdani noted that he had spoken to many New Yorkers who voted for Trump specifically because of the cost of living and a desire to end “forever wars”—two areas where the Mayor-elect said they shared a purpose.

“He doesn’t want to see crime, and I don’t want to see crime,” Trump added, noting that Mamdani’s views might be “a little out there,” but predicting he could “surprise some conservative people.”

Trump even jumped to Mamdani’s defense when the press grilled the Mayor-elect for flying to Washington instead of taking the greener option of the train. “I’ll stick up for you,” the President interjected, noting the drive is long and Mamdani works hard.

As the meeting concluded, Trump compared the dynamic to his relationship with Senator Bernie Sanders, suggesting that sometimes the political spectrum bends until the ends meet.

“If he could be a spectacular success, I’d be very happy,” Trump said. “I’ll be cheering for him.”
