Trump Launches ‘Genesis Mission,’ Comparing New AI Initiative To Manhattan Project
President Donald Trump signed an executive order Monday establishing the “Genesis Mission,” a sweeping federal initiative designed to cement American dominance in artificial intelligence. The directive explicitly compares the urgency of the new effort to the Manhattan Project, the World War II-era program that developed the atomic bomb.
The order instructs the Department of Energy (DOE) to build the “American Science and Security Platform,” a centralized hub integrating the world’s largest collection of federal scientific data with the nation’s most powerful supercomputers.
“Today, America is in a race for global technology dominance in the development of artificial intelligence,” the order reads. “The challenges we face require a historic national effort.”
Under the new mandate, the Energy Secretary is tasked with identifying at least 20 “science and technology challenges” within 60 days. These priority areas include advanced manufacturing, biotechnology, critical materials, nuclear fission and fusion, quantum information science, and semiconductors.
The Genesis Mission aims to cut research timelines from years to days by using AI agents to automate workflows, test hypotheses, and model experimental outcomes. The order directs the DOE to inventory all available federal computing resources—including those at national laboratories and secure cloud environments—within 90 days.
While the mission is led by the federal government, the framework allows for partnerships with private companies and universities. The order stipulates that the Secretary of Energy must develop security protocols to protect proprietary and classified data while allowing external partners to access the platform.
The administration views the initiative as critical to national security and economic growth, arguing that AI-driven discovery is necessary to maintain a strategic edge over global competitors. The Secretary of Energy is required to submit a progress report to the President within one year, detailing the platform’s operational status and the scope of public-private partnerships formed.
