In a historic move that is stirring up debate across the nation, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry has signed into law a bill that mandates the display of the Ten Commandments in all public school classrooms. Louisiana is now the first state to require such a display, possibly setting a precedent for others to follow.

Under this GOP-drafted legislation, each classroom from kindergarten to state-funded universities will showcase a poster-sized version of the Ten Commandments in “large, easily readable font.” Despite concerns raised by opponents about the law’s constitutionality, the bill received no final veto from Gov. Landry, signaling the end of the gubernatorial decision-making period.
While critics anticipated legal challenges ahead, supporters of the law emphasize that the display is not merely religious in nature but rather holds significant historical value. The legislation describes the Ten Commandments as “foundational documents of our state and national government,” emphasizing its intrinsic connection to American history and values.

By the beginning of 2025, these poster displays, accompanied by a brief contextual statement highlighting the Commandments’ historical role in American education, will be visible in every public school classroom in Louisiana. It’s worth noting that the cost of these displays will be covered by donations, with no state funds allocated to implement the mandate.
In addition to the Ten Commandments, the new law “authorizes” – though does not require – the display of other historical documents like the Mayflower Compact, the Declaration of Independence, and the Northwest Ordinance in K-12 public schools.
While other states, including Texas, Oklahoma, and Utah, have introduced similar bills regarding the display of the Ten Commandments in classrooms, Louisiana stands alone in successfully enacting such legislation.
