DOJ Launches Probe Into Black Lives Matter Movement’s Finances, $90 Million In Donations
The Justice Department (DOJ) is investigating whether leaders in the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement defrauded donors who contributed tens of millions of dollars during the 2020 racial justice protests.
Citing unidentified sources, The Associated Press broke the story late Thursday.
According to the AP, federal law enforcement officials have issued subpoenas and served at least one search warrant as part of a probe into the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation, Inc., and other Black-led organizations.
The BLM foundation took in over $90 million in donations following the 2020 murder of George Floyd. The movement has faced criticism for its public accounting of these funds, notably after leaders confirmed that donations were used to purchase a $6 million property in the Los Angeles area in 2022.
While leaders have denied any wrongdoing and stated the foundation is “not a target of any federal criminal investigation,” the investigation itself brings fresh scrutiny to the movement’s financial transparency.
“We remain committed to full transparency, accountability, and the responsible stewardship of resources dedicated to building a better future for Black communities,” the foundation said in the statement to the AP.
