Cornell To Pay $60 Million To End Federal Probes And Restore Research Funding

Cornell University has agreed to a $60 million settlement with the federal government to end civil rights investigations and restore over $250 million in withheld research funding. The agreement also requires the university to accept the Trump administration’s interpretation of civil rights laws.

Cornell President Michael Kotlikoff announced the deal on Friday. Under the terms, the Ivy League institution will pay $30 million directly to the U.S. government and allocate another $30 million toward research supporting American farmers.

In a statement, Kotlikoff said the agreement upholds the university’s core principles while reviving its partnership with the government. “This agreement revives that partnership, while affirming the university’s commitment to the principles of academic freedom, independence, and institutional autonomy that, from our founding, have been integral to our excellence,” he stated.

The settlement concludes the investigations into alleged civil rights violations at the school.
