Capitalism’s Appeal Fades As Socialism Holds Steady, Gallup Poll Reveals
Americans’ positive views of capitalism hit a new low, while Democrats’ support for socialism grows
A new Gallup poll indicates a shifting landscape in Americans’ perceptions of economic systems, with favorable views of capitalism reaching a new low of 54%. This marks a significant six-point drop from 60% in 2021 and a departure from the generally stable positive ratings seen in previous years.
Meanwhile, positive perceptions of socialism have remained steady at 39%. The survey, conducted from August 1-20, highlights a growing partisan divide and a general skepticism toward large corporations.
The decline in pro-capitalist sentiment is driven largely by Democrats and independents. For the first time, less than half of Democrats (42%) hold a positive view of capitalism, an eight-percentage-point decrease since 2021. Independents also saw an eight-point drop, with 51% still viewing capitalism favorably. Republicans’ positive views, in contrast, have remained largely unchanged at 74%.
While overall views of socialism have been static, a closer look reveals a notable shift among Democrats. Their positive rating of socialism has risen to roughly two-thirds (66%), up from 50% in 2010.
This trend, which began to accelerate around 2016, means Democrats are now the only partisan group to view socialism more favorably than capitalism, with a significant 24-point gap. This coincides with the rise of prominent self-identified democratic socialists like Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
The poll also sheds light on Americans’ views of specific economic sectors. While small businesses enjoy overwhelming support (95% positive), and free enterprise remains highly favored (81%), big business is viewed negatively by a majority of Americans (62%). Positive perceptions of big business have plummeted to just 37%, a stark contrast to the 52% who held a favorable view as recently as 2019. The decline is most pronounced among Democrats, whose positive rating has dropped 17 points in the last four years.
This growing skepticism toward big business, coupled with the dip in support for capitalism, suggests a nuanced view of the American economic system.
While the core principles of free enterprise and the entrepreneurial spirit of small businesses are still widely embraced, the poll reveals a growing dissatisfaction with the influence and practices of large corporations and a broader questioning of the capitalist system itself.
