$80 Million To Extremism? Georgia Congressman Demands DOJ Investigate Soros’s Open Society
Rep. Earl L. “Buddy” Carter (R-GA) has formally requested that Attorney General Pam Bondi launch an immediate and comprehensive Department of Justice (DOJ) investigation into George Soros’s Open Society Foundations (OSF).
The Congressman’s letter urges the DOJ to determine if the non-profit organization and its affiliates have violated any federal laws related to domestic terrorism or material support for violence by funding left-wing extremist groups.
Congressman Carter’s appeal follows two recent, high-profile acts of political violence in September 2025, which he characterizes as part of a disturbing trend of escalating far-left extremism since 2016.
September 10, 2025: Assassination of Charlie Kirk: Conservative activist Charlie Kirk was fatally shot at Utah Valley University in an apparent act of political violence. The perpetrator, 22-year-old Tyler James Robinson, was charged with aggravated murder and prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty.
September 24, 2025: Dallas ICE Facility Shooting: A gunman, later identified as 29-year-old Joshua Jahn, opened fire on a Dallas ICE field office. Jahn, whose motive was determined to be anti-ICE and whose ammunition was marked “ANTI-ICE,” fatally shot one detainee and critically wounded two others, one of whom later died from their injuries six days later.
Authorities found that Jahn acted alone in what was considered a premeditated terrorist act targeting ICE agents.
Carter stated that, according to public reports, left-wing extremists were responsible for at least five separate terrorist attacks or plots as of July 4, 2025, suggesting a trajectory for the year to become one of the most violent in recent history.
Allegations of Funding Extremist Groups with $80M
The core of the Congressman’s request is a detailed allegation, based on external reporting, that the Open Society Foundations have distributed over $80 million to groups tied to political extremism and violence since 2016.
The letter and accompanying documentation list several organizations that allegedly received OSF funding:
Movement for Black Lives (M4BL): Reported to have received $18 million. M4BL is noted for co-authoring a guide that promotes civil disruption and allegedly appeared to justify the October 7 Hamas terrorist attacks.
Center for Third World Organizing (CTWO) and the Ruckus Society: These groups were reportedly funded and are accused of providing training in property destruction during the 2020 riots. The Ruckus Society is a militant “direct action” group.
Sunrise Movement: Reported to have received funding and is cited for its support of the Antifa-linked Stop Cop City campaign, where activists face numerous domestic terrorism and racketeering charges.
Al-Haq: An organization in the West Bank that reportedly received over $2.3 million in grants from 2016 to 2023. Al-Haq has been accused of ties to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), a designated foreign terrorist organization, and was sanctioned by the U.S. State Department in September 2025.
Rep. Carter closed his letter by urging Bondi to treat these concerns with the utmost urgency to ensure organizations that “engage in, support, or incite political violence must not be tolerated.”
